Rental Policies
Certification Class required prior to renting.
The certification class is $100 and includes a $50 credit toward longarm rental. Need to take the certification class? Click HERE to find upcoming classes.
This hands-on class is designed to help you feel confident and comfortable using a longarm quilting machine. You’ll learn how to operate the machine safely, set up your quilt properly, manage the thread and bobbin, try your hand at both free motion and pantograph quilting, and pick up troubleshooting tips to keep things running smoothly.
Certification Class test out.
If you have prior experience with longarm quilting, you may request to test out of the certification class. The test-out session is $25 per hour and must be scheduled with a staff member in advance. Please call the shop at 573-476-3779 to schedule a time.
- Loading a quilt onto the frame correctly
- Threading the machine and winding the bobbin
- Testing bobbin tension and adjusting thread settings as needed
- Starting and stopping cleanly
- Basic troubleshooting
If you successfully demonstrate all required skills, you'll be cleared to rent the longarm without taking the full certification class. If more instruction is needed, we may recommend completing the full class to ensure a successful quilting experience.
Each quilter uses the machine at their own risk.
While we do our best to maintain the longarm in excellent working conditions, issues can occasionally occur—either due to user error or mechanical problems. For example, a mistake during bobbin changes or a worn bobbin tension spring may affect stitch quality. These things happen, as this is a machine. In the event of such issues, My Quilty Pleasure staff is not responsible for removing stitches or replacing damaged fabric or other materials.
Reservation Policy
Reservations are required and must be made in advance of your quilting session. A $20 non-refundable reservation fee is due at the time of booking and will be applied toward your quilting time.
If you need to reschedule, we require at least 48 hours' notice. With proper notice, your reservation fee can be transferred to a new time slot. Cancellations or missed appointments with less than 48 hours’ notice will result in loss of the deposit.
Costs
The required certification class is $100 and includes a $50 credit toward longarm rental fees upon completion. The rental rate is $20 per hour. Your quilting time begins when you start loading your quilt. Time is tracked in 15-minute increments. If you do not use a full hour, you will be charged for the nearest quarter-hour.
Use it or Lose it
To help you retain the skills you learned in your certification class, we ask that you schedule your first longarm rental within 2 to 4 weeks of completing the class. Waiting too long can lead to forgotten steps, lost confidence, and a less successful quilting experience.
If it’s been more than 4 weeks since your class, we may require a staff mentor to assist you during your rental. The fee for staff assistance is $25 per hour.
We understand that you may need some help during your first rental after certification—that's expected. However, our goal is to help you grow more confident and independent with each visit.
If it’s been more than one year since you have taken the class and/or rented the machine, you will be asked to retake the certification class to ensure you are set up for success.
Breaks
Renters are welcome to work at their own pace and take breaks as needed. You will not be charged for time spent on breaks; however, please plan accordingly to ensure your project is completed by the end of our business hours. Quilts cannot be left in the store overnight.
My Quilty Pleasure is not responsible for quilts or personal items left unattended. For your convenience, a refrigerator is available in the classroom if you’d like to bring lunch, or you are welcome to have food delivered.
Thread
Thread is included in the rental fee. We supply a variety of solid color thread for your use. For consistency and machine performance, we require all renters to use our thread. Bringing your own thread is not allowed.
Variegated thread is prohibited due to frequent thread breaks and tension issues.
Each rental begins with a new needle. Sometimes things happen and the needle breaks. Please find the broken tip and take the needle shaft out. A new needle will be $1. If you have more than one needle break here are some common issues:
- Needle was not placed all the way into the needle bar.
- Needle inserted backwards or otherwise improperly.
- Needle struck ruler, pin, or other foreign object.
- Quilt top not properly prepped with pressed seams.
Pantograph Patterns
You are welcome to use any of our edge-to-edge (E2E) pantograph patterns at no additional charge during your rental. However, photocopying or tracing the patterns is not permitted.
If you'd like to use a pantograph we don’t have in stock, you may bring your own or speak with a staff member. We’re often open to purchasing new patterns upon customer requests, especially if we believe others might enjoy using them as well.
Free Motion Quilting (FMQ)
Free motion quilting is available using the front handlebars. It takes practice, but FMQ allows for creative expression in a way pantographs can't. The key is to plan ahead with your design, and then relax, breathe and enjoy the process.
We have FMQ books available in the shop, and you’ll find even more resources at the local library and online (YouTube tutorials are especially helpful). One of the best ways to get comfortable is to bring two yards of scrap or sale fabric and batting and simply practice. This is a great idea for your first time renting the machine.
Friends & Visitors
While you're welcome to have a friend or guest during your session, please note that anyone who hasn't completed certification may not assist with or touch the longarm for safety and insurance reasons.
Please note that having more than one guest can make the space crowded and impact your comfort and productivity. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Valet Service
Hate loading your quilt? We’ve got you covered! Just fill out a Valet Service form and bring your quilt top 48 hours before your reservation date. We’ll load your quilt on the frame and have it ready when you arrive.
The fee for this service is $25.
Damage Due to Negligence
Renter is responsible for using all equipment, including the longarm quilting machine, with care and according to provided instructions. In the event that damage occurs due to misuse, neglect, or failure to follow proper operational guidelines, the renter will be held financially responsible for the full cost of repairs, parts, and any associated service fees. My Quilty Pleasure reserves the right to determine if damage was due to negligence.
